More from Blizzcon 2010

Here are a few early concepts for the Ranger which eventually lead to the Demonhunter class in D3. I can't wait to play this class the way it finally turned out. In my opinion it's the closest thing to a Gothic-fantasy styled character in the current Diablo hero lineup.

These all range from 3-7 years ago. In order, newest at top:

  1. Awesome! So you're the one who did these. I've been wanting to see a bigger version of the last two ever since they shared them at Blizzcon.

  2. These are great. What is the filter on the last 2 images? They've got a really cool feel to them

    Thanks for sharing your work!

  5. Sure Pete.

Take the last image for example, Ranger_LIT: About 6 years ago the brushes I used most often were the hard and soft rounds. I also liked to use the paint daubs filter over my brushwork to help get a sort of watercolor effect. No idea if this is the best way to achieve that, but that's how I did it. I also employed a bit of strategic photo overlay. It's obvious in the grass at his feet, but perhaps less obvious is the chipped paint on a wall photo I used in the negative space around him close to the ground for noise/visual interest? I used to do a lot of weird things 5-6 years ago that I wish I still used. Now I am more all about doing everything through brute force brushwork because I am trying to understand form better, but I've lost a lot of that loose energy from before.

I also go through phases where I favor using one type of brush. The latest Ranger concept I did at the top was done in '08, and painted almost entirely with a chalk brush. I never used to use pressure sensitivity or brush variation, I barely understood color...still and tackling that one...yeah man, I'm a mess. Thanks for making me take a good long look at myself as an artist, asshole. ;)

  12. Thanks Richie! I didn't really share that much there actually. One of these days I'll just post WIP's. Then you will see that there isn't much intelligence at work.

  14. The look great, I was looking for the mage/wiz one though. Not just into melee characters on games like this.
